About Us

The Northumberland Humane Society is made up of several devoted individuals - a committed public membership group, a volunteer board of directors, a dedicated animal care supervisor and staff, two animal cruelty investigators, a volunteer/event coordinator, a web designer/photographer, volunteer staff at the NHS Thrift Shop, and our greatly appreciated and tireless group of general volunteers.

The board of directors and animal care staff work together to provide the best possible care to animals in the community and at the shelter. Volunteers are the main reason the NHS can continue its efforts enhancing the lives of animals, as well as our membership group and community which provide us with the donations that allow us to continue to care for all animals that enter the shelter. The NHS is not funded by any federal or municipal levels of government - we rely entirely on donations, community support, and monies generated through fundraising efforts.

The NHS does not euthanize animals for space; we instead provide a waiting list for animals being surrendered to the shelter. Euthanasia is done only when recommended by a veterinarian for medical or behavioral reasons. At this time the NHS would like to thank our local vets for providing their time to our animals, whether it be through spay/neuter or investigations of extreme cases of neglect. Without their time and effort we would be unable to function at the capacity that we do today. Thank you: Port Hope Veterinary Hospital, Ganaraska Animal Clinic, Northumberland Veterinary Clinic, Strathy Road Animal Hospital, Midtown Animal Hospital, Pine Ridge Veterinary Clinic, Campbellford Veterinary Clinic.
